The Desire Laser, now with Fotona

A new strategy to increase female desire is beginning to be used in Brazil. This is the Fotona laser, a device also known for its use in aesthetics against the signs of aging. "Because it is a minimally invasive method, virtually devoid of adverse effects, it contributes to the arsenal available in the field of gynecology," states gynecologist Eduardo Tomioka, from São Paulo. Lack of libido is one of the main female complaints regarding sexual life. According to a study by the University of São Paulo, one in four Brazilian women state that their desire is not as strong as they would like or report difficulties in reaching orgasm.

Fotona belongs to the category of non-ablative lasers. That is, they do not burn. Physicians who use it claim that it improves libido through an indirect mechanism. Its application would actually treat vaginal wall atrophy – a problem presented especially by post-menopausal women. The condition causes pain during sexual intercourse, a factor that can lead to reduced desire.

Applied within the vaginal mucosa through a specific handpiece, Fotona, according to specialists, promotes tissue intumescence in the region with increased vascularization. "With this, there is greater collagen production," explains gynecologist José Bento, from São Paulo. Collagen is the protein that gives support to the skin. The process would result in several benefits. "The vaginal tightening obtained by collagen production is capable of allowing more intimate contact during sexual intercourse and, consequently, an improved tactile sensation," says gynecologist Tomioka. Furthermore, physicians assure that there is an increase in lubrication, another factor that facilitates sex. Applications are performed in the office. Generally, one to three sessions are necessary, depending on the patient's conditions.

In addition to vaginal atrophy, Fotona is being used in the treatment of vaginal dryness and urinary incontinence, conditions that tend to appear more frequently after menopause. In the opinion of specialists, one of its advantages lies in the fact that it is a minimally invasive option, allowing women to return to their activities immediately after the application.
