Bioflavonoids and Vitamin C

Although not true vitamins, they act in the body as vitamin potentiators, especially for ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol. They are often referred to as vitamin P.
Bioflavonoids increase the absorption of vitamin C, and both should be taken concomitantly.
Bioflavonoids themselves have a much greater antioxidant effect than vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, often more than all three combined, especially pycnogenol, one of the most important. They exist in different forms: the most common are citrus bioflavonoids, so those most used include hesperidin, quercetin, and rutin, among others such as pycnogenol and Gingko biloba. They are extensively used in the treatment of injuries during physical activities, as they improve pain, edema, and bruising.
They also reduce localized pain in the legs and spine, decreasing symptoms caused by continuous hemorrhages or hypocalcemia.
Bioflavonoids act synergistically with vitamin C to protect and preserve the structure of capillaries. In addition, they have an antibacterial effect and promote circulation.
They stimulate bile production and, consequently, reduce the production of cholesterol used in the treatment and prevention of cataracts. When taken with vitamin C, bioflavonoids also reduce the symptoms of oral herpes. Quercetin is a bioflavonoid found primarily in algae and, in general, in supplement form. It can be useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of asthma symptoms.
Associated with bromelain, a pineapple enzyme, and vitamin C, in addition to magnesium ascorbate, which is a presentation of vitamin C, they can have a great effect, especially in patients with asthmatic bronchitis.
The most important sources of bioflavonoids include the white material found just beneath the peel of citrus fruits and peppers. Other important sources are peaches, cherries, grapes, lemons, and oranges. Among the herbs that contain them are rose hips.
